‘Before Darfur’ is a collection of work by photographer Jil Orpen, taken in the Sudan between 1975 and 1980.

"Before the undeclared civil war, the Sudan had close to 300 different tribes. For a photographer a visual feast was there for the taking - from the borders of Egypt, Libya, Niger, Mali, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and the Red Sea, to the vast hinterland. This is a record of my journey over five years. With many miles underfoot, the Sudan and its contrasts become very familiar to me. Nothing was as it first seemed. Everyday was a challenge, but the people I met coped with a dignity I have rarely seen since. Few of them are alive today."
